Celebrating Women In Construction

In honor of the 24th annual Women in Construction (WIC) Week, we want to take a moment to appreciate the women that help Sunstate operate smoothly day in and day out – some of whom have been here since the beginning!

WIC Week is hosted by the National Association of Women in Construction, a nonprofit founded in 1953 that’s been encouraging and supporting women in the construction field while bringing awareness to opportunities for growth.

This year’s theme is “Envision Equity,” which seeks to raise awareness of opportunities for women to enjoy a wide range of roles in the construction industry—from tradeswomen to project managers to administrative positions and even business ownership. Sunstate is proud to have talented women fill many of these key roles and more!

Thinking about getting started in construction? Here are some words of wisdom from the women who continue to be leaders and mentors through their dedication to the industry and helping others succeed.

“There is never a time when something exciting isn’t going on in the industry. I have had the privilege of working alongside so many awesome partners, in many different trades, to aid in the building of so many extraordinary structures. There are so many untapped opportunities for women in the construction industry, and the potential for a long successful career. I encourage women wanting to enter construction to explore opportunities with confidence, courage, and free of self-doubt."

- Lena G. District Sales Manager

“I like delivering construction equipment to many different jobsites and providing the best customer service to our customers. Every day is a challenge, and I’m always learning something new.”

- Ciara R. Rollback Driver

“Know your craft. The person whom you admire most for their knowledge, make it a point to learn more. The person whom you admire the most for their hard work, work harder. Ask questions… everyone you ask has been in your shoes at one point or another. You are the creator of your own destiny. The sky is the limit. Set yourself up for all the success you deserve, and your hard work will pay off.”

- Janel W. Inside Sales

“I would encourage women to have a mentor, collaborate with others, seek and share knowledge, participate in industry related activities, and to have the courage to facilitate change.”

- Penny M. Sr. Risk Claims Manager

“Always ask questions and always be willing to look at things from another’s perspective. Also, don’t be afraid to be as active as you can by going on ride-a-longs or working in the yard."

- Grecia L. Dispatcher

"Look for and be a support to other women in the industry. There are many knowledgeable men and women out there to help guide you towards a very successful career in construction."

- Patty C. Director of Fleet Excellence

"What I love most about the construction industry is that it is ever-changing. No two days are the same. It is incredible to be part of a project from when it is a 40-foot hole in the ground; fast forward 18 months later and it's a 20-story building. There's nothing else like it. It's such a fun business to be a part of."

- Francine A. Sales Regional Trainer
